Cason Wallace

21-Year-Old GuardG
Oklahoma City Thunder
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Wallace cobbled together a nice rookie season, finishing just outside the top 200 in nine-category formats, averaging 6.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 1.2 three-pointers in 20.6 minutes per game. Although he was able to carve out a consistent role, the offseason addition of Alex Caruso could limit Wallace's upside, at least for another year. With Caruso assuming the fifth starting position, Luguentz Dort will likely shift to the bench where he will be the primary sixth man. This will likely result in players like Wallace and Isaiah Joe playing no more than 20 minutes per game. As we saw last season, this won't be enough for Wallace to be considered a viable asset outside of slightly deeper formats. His upside remains relatively high but as a member of a team with title aspirations, 2024-25 may not be Wallace's breakout year. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Carson Wallace declared for the NBA Draft following his freshman year at Kentucky. He started 31 of 32 games, averaging 11.7 points on 45/35/76 shooting, 4.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 32.1 minutes - landing him on the SEC All-Freshman Team. Shortly before Christmas, on Dec. 21, Wallace had a monster performance against Florida A&M, where he posted 27 points (10-15 FG, 5-6 3Pt, 2-5 FT), nine assists, four steals and two rebounds in 32 minutes. Leading up to college, the combo guard attended Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas and was the Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year in the state while averaging 19.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists. He also played in the McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand Classic games, where he combined for 22 points, seven assists and three steals in 45 minutes. The 6-foot-4, 193-pound Wallace dropped plenty of dimes for Kentucky but projects as more of a combo guard at the NBA level, especially since he has a smooth catch-and-shoot jumper. The assists should come though, as he has the vision to pump fake, drive and find the open man. The real standout of his game, however, is his defense. He can make life difficult and wall off opposing ballhandlers, and he's good at finding opportunities off the ball for helpside blocks or jumping in the passing lanes. He should be able to switch onto NBA wings if needed. Wallace has drawn understandable comparisons to Jrue Holiday, another bullying two-way combo guard that can hit open threes. Wallace's ability to disrupt opposing point guards and make the right play offensively should provide him with a significant NBA role to start his career. If his great spot-up three-point shooting becomes even more reliable, a starting role for a team that needs a 3-and-D jolt could be in the cards sooner than later.

December 5, 2024
Wallace won't start Thursday against the Raptors, Blake Murphy of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
The Thunder have been rotating players at the starting wing spot alongside Luguentz Dort throughout the season, but Wallace appeared to be gaining traction on the top unit after starting each of the previous three contests. However, after Isaiah Joe posted 19 points off the bench in Tuesday's win over the Jazz, he'll be rewarded with a move to the starting five while Wallace moves to the second unit.

2023 Fantasy Outlook

He should be able to switch onto NBA wings if needed. Wallace has drawn comparisons to Jrue Holiday, another bullying two-way combo guard who can hit open threes. In Summer League with the Thunder, he struggled with his assist-to-turnover ratio and overall efficiency, but he went a solid 12-of-31 from deep. While the No. 10 overall pick has upside, minutes may not be easy to come by. OKC is deep at guard, a position featuring Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Lu Dort, Jalen Williams and Vasilije Micic. It may not be worth targeting Wallace in redraft leagues this season, but that doesn't mean things won't pan out in the future.
