Vasquez (ankle) was released Wednesday by the Nets, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports.

ANALYSIS
Vasquez has been held out of the last four games with a right ankle injury, and it's now come to the light that the 29-year-old will require surgery. It's the same ankle that also required a procedure last December, ultimately limiting him to just 23 games with the Bucks in 2015-16. With his long-term future clouded, the Nets will part ways with Vasquez and replace him with rookie Yogi Ferrell, who will help restore some depth at point guard with Jeremy Lin (hamstring) and Caris LeVert (foot) likely to miss several more games.

Vasquez signed with the Bucks last summer and was expected to be a major contributor off the bench, but his season was marred by an ankle injury that robbed him of 59 games. Even when healthy, Vasquez was a shell of his 2014-15 self, shooting a career-worst 32.6 percent from the floor and 24.7 percent from distance. After joining the Nets during this past offseason, marking his third team in as many years, the 29-year-old will look to regain his reputation as one of the league's more unique and dependable backup point guards. At 6-foot-6, Vasquez's size has always been intriguing, though his defensive deficiencies have underscored impressive assist and outside shooting (37.8% from three-point range from 2013-14 through 2014-15) numbers. In Brooklyn, Vasquez will play behind Jeremy Lin, but his experience provides him an advantage over rookie Isaiah Whitehead. Whether Vasquez plays enough to achieve fantasy relevance remains to be seen, and he's somewhat of a risky commodity after last season's shortcomings. Vasquez was limited entering training camp while continuing to rehab his right ankle, and while he insists he'll be ready for the start of the regular season, it's possible the Nets could restrict his workload off the bench in the early going.

Joining his fifth team and entering his seventh year in the league, Vasquez will start the year off the bench in a backup role to Michael Carter-Williams. He will be looking to bring the consistency he displayed over all 82 games played with the Raptors last season. Averaging 24 minutes per game in 2014-15, Vasquez finished with 9.5 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game, and he will look to emerge as a viable sixth man in the Bucks' system. His strong suit has always been long-range shooting - he shot 38 percent from downtown in 2014-15 - a contrast to Carter-Williams, whose struggles from beyond the arc are well-chronicled. Vasquez led the league in total assists in 2012-13 (704), but it's an effort the 28-year-old has not come close to replicating in the two seasons since. While he's a pedestrian defender at best, Vasquez could share a moderate amount of time with Carter-Williams, and he'll also play off the ball given his catch-and-shoot ability. Vasquez should fare well as a versatile bench option for coach Jason Kidd, but the question is whether he'll consistently play enough minutes to warrant significant fantasy value in standard leagues.

Last offseason, Vasquez was coming off a successful third NBA season as the Pelicans' starting point guard. He had averaged nearly a double-double but was sent to the Kings in the Tyreke Evans deal and wound up getting stuck in a timeshare with Isaiah Thomas last season. After just 18 games, the Kings elected to give Thomas the job full-time and shipped the 27-year-old Venezuelan back east, including him in a package to land Rudy Gay from Toronto. Now firmly installed on the bench behind Kyle Lowry, Vasquez emerged as the leader of a dynamic second unit alongside ex-Kings Patrick Patterson and John Salmons that helped stabilize the Raptors' roster and propelled them into the playoffs. Between his two organizations, Vasquez played in 79 games (starting 23) and averaged 9.6 points, 4.1 assists, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.4 three-pointers in 23 minutes per game while shooting 42 percent from the field, 38 percent from beyond the arc, and 88 percent from the free-throw line. Returning to Toronto on a two-year contract, Vasquez will once again back up Lowry at the point and help keep the Raptors offense running smoothly, while also providing the club with some insurance should injuries lay Lowry low.

Vasquez will probably start along with McLemore in the Kings' backcourt. Vasquez was a pass-first point guard with a high assist rate last season with the Hornets. His starting job is far from guaranteed, however, as Vasquez will have to battle the less polished but more athletic Isaiah Thomas for that role. If Vasquez can hold on as starter, he could be one of the league leaders in assists. In addition to his passing, Vasquez is a strong rebounder for a point guard.

Channeling his inner General Grievous, Vasquez used the force and his skills to outplay Jarrett Jack and win the starting point guard job. While playing in every game and starting 26, Vasquez came out of last season averaging 8.9 ppg, 5.4 apg, 2.4 rpg and a 2.43 assist:steal ratio. His youth and experience with the team make Vasquez a viable dark-horse fantasy option for the 2012-2013 season. If Vasquez can come out of the gates quickly, establish himself as the starter, and quell doubts about Rivers taking his job, this could be a big season for Grievis.

Vasquez occupied a nebulous role in his rookie season, but he took his game to another level come the playoffs, and he hit 51.2 percent of his shots during his 13 postseason games. His role could expand if he improves on his perimeter shooting. Vasquez should battle in camp to take the reins as the team’s No. 2 point guard, but he will need to improve his ball handling skills to improve on his 12.3 minutes per game from last year.

Vazquez was the Grizzlies� second first-round selection in June�s draft, and he should immediately slot as one of their primary backup point guards. Vasquez is significantly larger than current starting point guard Mike Conley, Jr., and the rookie's energy could make him an asset off the bench. He averaged 19.6 points per game in the ACC last season, but he probably won�t get enough playing time to even attempt to approach that number in his rookie campaign. Offseason ankle surgery may limit his early-season maturation.
