2014 Fantasy Outlook
Malcolm Thomas was traded to Cleveland along with Erik Murphy and John Lucas III from Utah in exchange for Carrick Felix. The 6-9 forward has existed along the fringe of the NBA for the past three seasons. He appeared in Las Vegas Summer League with the Jazz and averaged 11.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in three games. The former San Diego State Aztec played in seven games with the Jazz and provided 1.9 points and 1.7 rebounds in seven minutes per game. If he were given significant playing time, Thomas could be a decent rebounder for his size. He showed off excellent board work in college next to Kawhi Leonard. The Cavaliers are Thomas' fifth NBA franchise, and he has previously appeared in games with the Spurs (in two different seasons), Bulls, and Warriors in addition to the Jazz. Thomas has also competed internationally in Korea and Israel. He will likely compete with Erik Murphy for a roster spot, but he doesn't have much of a perimeter game (unlike Murphy). If he can make the squad, he could provide energy, defense, and rebounding for the Cavaliers' reserve unit.
