Malik Newman

Malik Tidderious Newman was born Feb. 21, 1997 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He is the son of Horatio Webster and LaKeyshia Newman-Myles. His father played for Mississippi State University from 1997-98 and was a first-team All-SEC selection in 1998. In high school, Newman attended Callaway High School under coach David Sanders. By the end of his four years of high school play, he was a McDonald's All-American and was named the No. 1 shooting guard in the country by ESPN. He led Callaway to four Class 5A state championships and was twice awarded Mr. Basketball in the state of Mississippi. For college, he attended Mississippi State as a freshman and then transferred to Kansas. During his one season at Kansas, before declaring for the 2018 NBA Draft, Newman was named Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Newman attended Mississippi State as a freshman. There, he started 22 of 29 appearances, averaging 11.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He established season highs of 25 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block. Following his freshman year, Newman transferred to Kansas, needing to wait one season before taking the court for his new team. As a sophomore in 2017-18 with Kansas, Newman started 33 of 39 appearances, averaging 14.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals. He was also named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and the Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Newman set single-game highs of 32 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks.
