Keen on NBA comeback
GFree Agent
August 31, 2022
Cole is open to returning to the NBA, writes Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press.
ANALYSIS
Cole went to the NBA Finals with the Heat during his first three seasons in the league, but he has been out of the league since 2017 and has played for multiple teams overseas since. The 33-year-old point guard will represent Team USA in the FIBA AmeriCup Tournament alongside other former NBA players such as Patrick McCaw and Jodie Meeks.

Cole enjoyed his greatest professional success after a mid-season deal sent him to the Pelicans from the Heat last season. In 28 games with New Orleans, Cole averaged 9.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 0.5 steals to go along with 28 three-pointers in 24 minutes per game. His scoring and shooting percentages were considerably better than the figures posted in 47 games with the Heat, while his other numbers stayed relatively similar. Playing backup point guard to Jrue Holiday is an enviable position given Holiday's frequent injury concerns, but even if the starting point guard misses considerable time, Cole will still be behind Tyreke Evans for ball-handling duties. However, with no other legitimate point guard options currently on the roster, Cole shouldn't face very much competition for playing time in the Pelicans backcourt. With three-happy head coach Alvin Gentry now in charge, Cole could see more opportunities from beyond the arc after shooting a career-best 38 percent from distance after arriving in New Orleans.
Cole has spent his entire three-year career playing for the Heat. Last season, he averaged 6.4 points, 2.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.7 three-pointers in 25 minutes per game. The 25-year-old has come off the bench in relief of Mario Chalmers his whole career and will likely do more of the same this upcoming season. One could certainly argue that Cole provides more offensive flexibility to the Heat backcourt when he's on the court, but Chalmers provides Miami with a veteran defensive aggressor. New to the backcourt mix this season is the addition of rookie Shabazz Napier. The former Connecticut player showed a lot of potential in college and will try to steal some of Cole's playing time as he gets his feet wet in the NBA. At this point, Cole seems to have the edge over Napier, although Napier will have a chance this season to prove that he deserves a spot in the rotation, thus threatening Cole's current spot as a burst of offensive energy off the bench. The Cleveland State product did a solid job of contributing across the statistical board last season and might be an interesting option in fantasy this season if he's able to carve out more time on the court than the 25 minutes per game he was given last season.
Cole is a promising young player that is blocked for playing time at point guard. He took a slight step back in scoring averages, he did improve his shooting percentages and cut back on his turnovers. With Mario Chalmers back at point guard, it will keep Cole in a similar role as a backup. Even when he is on the floor, he is surrounded by quality scoring that limits his fantasy value.
Highly-regarded scoring small college scoring point who could get more playing time this year if Chalmers doesn't progress.
Rookie Norris Cole will make his NBA debut this season for the Heat. Cole, who was drafted out of Cleveland State, looks to have some relevance at the point guard position for Miami. The older-than-usual rookie (23-years-old), will likely play from the bench, but could see some minutes with his ability to shoot the 3-pointer.
