Castle was selected by the Spurs with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. A key piece in UConn's run to the national championship this spring, Castle will now team up with Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio. Checking in at 6-foot-6 with a 6-foot-9 wingspan, Castle has excellent size and is capable of playing both guard spots, as well as defending on the wing. Defense was his calling card at UConn, but the belief is that he'll be able to show off an expanded offensive package at the NBA level. Shooting is a major question mark for Castle, as he knocked down just 26.7 percent of his three-point attempts for the Huskies as a freshman. In Summer League, he averaged 17.3 points and 1.3 threes on 37/25/67 shooting, 5.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.3 turnovers in 25.5 minutes. He was aggressive offensively and played with physicality but didn't answer any questions about his shooting. For fantasy, there is concern about Castle's role in the offense and how many minutes he'll get. He's competing with Chris Paul, Tre Jones, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and to some extent, Harrison Barnes and Jeremy Sochan. Castle's lack of floor spacing complicates an already-squeezed court for Wembanyama. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Castle went to Newton High School in Covington, GA where he averaged 20.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.0 blocks in his senior year, and was selected to play in the 2023 McDonald's All-American game. He impressed scouts enough to be upgraded from a four-star recruit to a five-star recruit. Castle also played at the 2022 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship for USA's under-18 basketball team, averaging 5.5 points and 2.2 rebounds en route to winning a gold medal. At UConn, Castle was named Big East Freshman of the Year behind averages of 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 27.0 minutes. The Huskies won the 2024 NCAA Tournament where Castle scored a combined 36 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals in the final two games of the tournament. A sturdy 6-foot-6 guard/wing, Castle can use his physicality and change of pace to create offensive advantages and finish at the rim. He's shown a nice passing ability, and he's a tough defender. However, his shooting is a project. Castle went 20-for-75 (27%) from deep, and his 83-for-110 (76%) efficiency from the charity stripe is acceptable. Defenses routinely played far off him, daring him to launch from deep. Castle's ultimate ceiling will depend greatly on his ability to develop a perimeter shot. Ideally, he could go to a system using a floor-spacing five to minimize his weakness in that area. Overall, Castle should be able to impact the game physically on both ends of the floor, getting his teammates involved on offense and tiring out the opposing team's best guard/wing on the other end. Castle's all-around skillset combined with a poor jumper is reminiscent of the Thompson twins in last year's draft, but he's not as elite of an athlete as Amen and Ausar.
Explodes after trip to locker room
GSan Antonio Spurs
December 9, 2024
Castle amassed 22 points (8-15 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 4-5 FT), five rebounds, four assists and one steal across 34 minutes during Sunday's 121-116 victory over the Pelicans.
ANALYSIS Castle banged his shoulder in the second quarter, forcing a brief trip to the locker room. He was back on the bench before halftime and inflicted significant damage for the remainder of the game. Castle scored 12 points in the fourth quarter when he converted two three-point attempts, adding a rebound and a steal. The Spurs are headed into a four-day break before their next game, so Castle's injury is unlikely to be a burden after the rest period.

ANALYSIS Tre Jones recently stated that Castle "never gets rushed or sped up or anything," and Chris Paul was also complimentary of Castle's demeanor and how he was coached in college. The fourth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft is turning heads with his play and demeanor, and there's a strong chance he'll carve out a rotation role right away for a rebuilding Spurs team.
