54-hole leader collapses late
June 15, 2025
Burns struggled to an eight-over 78 in the final round to fall all the way into a share of seventh place in the U.S. Open.
ANALYSIS
Burns looked so in control all week, and even after turning in three-over-par, he was still in control of the tournament after a strong birdie on 10. From that point on it was utter disaster, however. He made a sloppy double on 11, a bogey at 12, another double on 15 and then bogeys on 16 and 18. It really just came out of nowhere for Burns who held the 54-hole lead by a stroke entering the day. His short game and putting really let him down on Sunday. This will be a tough learning experience for Burns who was seeking his first major championship victory. On one hand he has to be happy with his play after falling in a playoff at the RBC Canadian Open last week and then this showing at the U.S. Open, but also disappointed to get the job done in neither. He is still seeking his first win since March of 2023.
