The Padres have selected Smith with the 51st overall pick in the 2015 first-year player draft.
Of the high school pitchers available in this draft, Smith is among the best of the bunch in terms of velocity. He consistently hits the low 90s with his fastball, but it could tick up to the mid-to-upper 90s as his body fills out. It’s worth noting he looks remarkably comfortable on the mound, consistently repeating his delivery with ease and pounding the strike zone. Take away his fastball, and Smith is left with an average curveball and changeup. However, his secondary pitches have shown some degree of promise and could develop into quality out-pitches. Smith is currently committed to Florida Atlantic.
