Mata agreed Monday to a contract with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

After struggling to a 5.48 ERA and 1.68 WHIP with 93 strikeouts over 67.1 innings with Triple-A Worcester in 2025, Mata has elected to try his luck overseas in 2026. The move to Japan ends Mata's 10-year run in the organization, after the Red Sox signed him out of Venezuela for $25,000 in January 2016. He never reached the big-league level for the Red Sox, despite being a member of the 40-man roster for the 2021 through 2024 seasons.
