May (elbow) underwent a season-ending surgery earlier this week to repair an esophageal tear, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
May has been out all season while completing his recovery from July 2023 surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his throwing arm and was expected to begin a rehab assignment in the coming weeks. However, he'll have to wait until 2025 to return to the Los Angeles rotation and will be shut down from physical activity for at least two months as result of his surgery to address the esophageal tear, an injury he suffered while having dinner. May then sought medical attention the next day after experiencing pain in his throat and stomach, at which time he was diagnosed with a tear to the esophagus and sent in for surgery. The Dodgers have been dealing with a number of injuries to other starters this season, and May's return at some point in the second half was expected to burnish the club's depth. For now, James Paxton and Gavin Stone will serve as the Dodgers' top two starters, though Tyler Glasnow (back) and Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) are expected to rejoin the rotation in late July or early August.
