The Tigers
placed Olson on the 60-day injured list Tuesday after he underwent a right shoulder labral repair Feb. 2 that will keep him out for the entire 2026 season.
AnalysisEvan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press had previously reported Feb. 6 that Olson was unlikely to be ready for Opening Day, but his prognosis ended up being worse than anticipated. Olson -- who didn't pitch after July 24 last season due to a right shoulder strain -- began a throwing progression in December, but he evidently didn't respond as well as the Tigers had hoped. Perhaps as a reaction to Olson requiring a surgery that will keep him sidelined throughout the season, the Tigers brought in some major rotation reinforcements with the recent signings of
Framber Valdez Justin Verlander. With both Olson and
Jackson Jobe (elbow) headed for extended absences, youngster
Troy Melton may have a clearer path to the rotation in 2026.
