Filling in for Hamlin in Mexico
Truex will drive the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing in Sunday's Viva Mexico 250, the team announced Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Denny Hamlin welcomed his third child this week and he elected to skip the trip to Mexico and instead be with his family this weekend. Truex is the JGR reserve driver and has been on standby for Hamlin the last two weeks. Now he will get his chance to pilot a Cup Series car in great equipment. With this being the first time the Cup Series has raced at this track, Truex might not be in as big of a deficit as he might normally be on a track the Cup Series has visited regularly. Hamlin is expected to return to the No. 11 the following week at Pocono.
