Gilbert was named the 2017-18 American Conference Preseason Rookie of the Year on Monday.

Gilbert played in just three games last season before suffering a torn labrum that effectively ended what would have been his freshman campaign. The four-star guard started to flash some of his potential prior to the injury, and was actually promoted to the starting lineup after the first game, but that momentum was halted due to the injury. After multiple injuries derailed the Huskies' campaign and led to a 9-9 conference record in 2016-17, the young team is now healthy and will make a run at the conference title. A backcourt composed of Gilbert and preseason all-AAC first-teamer Jalen Adams will be the foundation for those aspirations.

Gilbert was medically cleared to play Monday, Jon Rothstein of FanRag Sports reports.

Gilbert is a former four-star recruit who suffered from a torn labrum in November of his debut season with the Huskies. It appears as though he's made a full recovery now, and after playing 29 minutes per game in the three contests he participated in last season, Gilbert should be set for another big role in Connecticut's backcourt this coming season.

Gilbert (shoulder) will undergo surgery for a torn labrum in his shoulder and will miss the remainder of 2016-17, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.

Gilbert should be available again next season, but hopefully this will clear up the issue with his shoulder that dates back to the spring. The freshman guard played in three games prior to being sidelined for the rest of the season, averaging 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.0 assists per contest. His absence leaves UConn's backcourt a bit depleted, especially considering he was expected to take on a heavy workload this season. Christian Vital has taken on a much larger role for the struggling Huskies in Gilbert's absence.

Gilbert dislocated his left shoulder, Dom Amore of The Hartford Courant reports.

Gilbert reinjured his left shoulder, the same shoulder that he injured last spring. A timetable for his return has yet to be announced, but don't expect the freshman starter to see the court any time soon. Throughout the Huskies' 2016-17 campaign, the guard has averaged 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists with 35 minutes.
