Carey began his career at Syracuse in 2018-19 before joining Rhode Island ahead of the 2020-21 campaign and spending the past three seasons with the Rams. Since he played in just two games in 2019-20 before taking a redshirt, Carey should have a sixth and final year of college eligibility remaining, and he'll likely be able to compete immediately at his next school assuming that he's leaving Rhode Island with his degree. He started in 20 of his 25 appearances as a fifth-year senior in 2022-23, averaging 9.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals in 28.7 minutes per contest.
