Van Komen entered the NCAA's transfer portal Saturday with the intention of leaving the Utah program, Josh Newman of The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
The 7-foot-4 center was a three-star recruit from Utah's 2019 signing class, but he struggled to see the court during his freshman season with the Utes. He appeared in just nine games on the campaign -- and none after Feb. 8 -- finishing with averages of 1.7 points and 1.7 boards in 4.8 minutes. Van Komen's size should allow him to find a spot on another Division I roster, though he would have to sit out the 2020-21 season unless granted a waiver from the NCAA.
