Massachusetts announced Wednesday that Fernandes received a waiver from the NCAA, making him eligible to compete immediately for the Minutemen.
ANALYSIS
Fernandes was part of a mass exodus from the Wichita State program this offseason. He entered the transfer portal shortly after the 2019-20 season was cancelled in mid-March and quickly found a new home at UMass, where he should immediately become the top challenger for the starting point guard job. As a true freshman on a veteran-laden Shockers squad last season, Fernandes appeared in 21 games (three starts) and averaged 1.4 points, 1.2 assists and 0.8 boards in 9.8 minutes per contest. He'll have three years of eligibility remaining at UMass.
