Hayes is a candidate to lock down the starting point guard role in his freshman season at NC State, Brendan Marks of The Athletic reports.
With Markell Johnson out of the picture for the Wolfpack, there's a large void left behind in both scoring and ball-handling. In steps Hayes, a consensus top-100 recruit who has already drawn praise for his shooting ability from head coach Kevin Keatts. NC State still has a quality, veteran option in Braxton Beverly, but Beverly is also one of the team's best three-point shooters that could stand without the responsibility of having to facilitate. If Hayes is able to lock down the job, he'd likely be joined in the starting five by Beverly, Devon Daniels, Jericole Hellems and DJ Funderburk. Keatts also has the option to go with size, however, as Manny Bates could step into the starting five in a two-guard lineup featuring just Beverly and Daniels in the backcourt.
