It was no surprise that the Seahawk leading scorer showed up when it mattered most. Newby struggled in the quarterfinal matchup with Hampton, scoring just nine points, but bounced back in a big way with 24 points in the semifinals and the 17 in the final. Despite poor shooting from three-point range, Newby found other ways to affect the game and forced defenders to foul him, where he took advantage of his 89-percent free throw percentage. Newby blossomed in his fifth collegiate season nearly doubling his collegiate career scoring average while still maintaining a respectable 35.7 percent three-point average as the team's primary shot taker.
