2020 Tournament PreviewThe Illini are back above .500 for the first time since the 2016-17 season, and will be making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012-13. This is due largely to the presence of breakout guard Ayo Dosunmu (16.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.1 apg), but coach Brad Underwood did an outstanding job on the recruiting trail as well. He brought in seven-footer Kofi Cockburn (13.6 ppg, 9.0 rpg), who has made this team formidable in the frountcourt alongside sophomore Giorgi Bezhanishvili (7.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg). With enough firepower to stop a conference loaded with skilled big men, the Illini were able to compile the nation's seventh-best offensive rebounding rate (35.9 percent) They finished among the Big Ten's top teams and went 8-8 in Quadrant 1/2 games. By the end of the year, Illinoi ranked No. 28 in KenPom's defensive efficiency metric despite just a 16.6 percent turnover rate (No. 305). With plenty of shooters to make the most out of these second-chance opportunities, this is a team that can match up with anyone in the field.
