2019 Tournament PreviewSt. Mary's bubble burst in 2018, but the Gaels had no intention of leaving it up to the committee this time around. Despite losing to Gonzaga twice in the regular season -- by 48 points in the first matchup -- the Gaels held the Zags to 47 points in the WCC tourney final en route to an automatic bid. The catalyst for the Gaels is junior Jordan Ford (21.3 ppg), whose scoring average is particularly impressive considering the Gaels' slow pace -- they rank 347th nationally in KenPom's tempo metric. A sharpshooting backcourt of Ford (42.3% from 3-point range) and 6-6 Tanner Krebs (40.5% 3pt) is complemented by a frontcourt of 6-8 Malik Fitts (15.3 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 40.3% 3pt) and 6-10 Jordan Hunter (7.9 ppg, 6.8 rpg). Throw in 6-10 freshman Matthias Tass off the bench and you get a unit that ranks 12th nationally in defensive rebounding rate. The computers also suggest the Gaels are deserving, as they rank 32nd in the NET and 31st on KenPom.
