With Chandler Worthy sidelined due to an ankle injury, Newman operated as the starting return man for a contest against Winnipeg at the beginning of August but shifted to the practice squad a week later. He hasn't been activated to the active roster since, so his release shouldn't impact Montreal's depth chart. In a corresponding move, the Alouettes signed Jerry Howard.
