Skyler Locklear News: Beginning season as backup
Locklear will begin the 2025 season as the primary backup as fellow quarterback Malachi Nelson has been named the starter for the team's season opener against Utah State, per Pete Thamel of ESPN.com.
The move comes as a bit of a surprise as Locklear was expected to earn the starting job heading into the 2025 season. The 5-foot-11 quarterback previously appeared in 10 games for the Miners in 2024, throwing for 1,583 yards and 10 touchdowns to six interceptions along with 237 yards and a pair of scores on the ground. Locklear is expected to serve as the primary backup at least to start the season behind Nelson.
