Cleared for spring practices
March 21, 2017
Coach Mike Sanford said Allen (knee) is medically cleared for spring practices, Bowling Green Daily News writer Brad Stephens reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen last played in September of 2015, when he suffered a severe knee injury of a still unspecified nature. Allen dealt with at least one setback, but the improbably lengthy absence would seemingly imply that the injury's initial nature was unusually bad. That he's cleared for spring practices, though, indicates a corner was turned in his recovery one way or another. The next issue to confront is his overall remaining athleticism -- Allen was a very good player before his injury, but now it's time to find out if he's still the same player. A big back with standout pass-catching skills, a full recovery from Allen would instantly make him a good bet to be one of the nation's most productive runners. The lack of predictability on that variable means he's a wildcard for now, though.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2015
2014
Allen was one of the best fantasy assets last year, rushing for 1,542 yards (5.7 YPC) and 13 touchdowns with 51 receptions for 476 yards and three touchdowns. The 6-0, 235-pound workhorse has three-down skills in an offense that will be among the nation's highest scoring. But his role is in some question after two offseason public intoxication episodes. Another concern is backup runner Anthony Wales, who could push for a bigger role after impressing with 518 yards and five touchdowns on just 82 carries last year (6.3 YPC). Check Allen's disciplinary status closer to the year, and move him into the top 20 if he escapes suspension.
Bobby Rainey and Antonio Andrews were both top-three fantasy backs for Western Kentucky the last four years, and now it's Allen's turn. Allen is the most bruising Hilltoppers RB yet, at 6-0, 235, with standout burst and receiving skills for such a big runner. He has 674 rushing yards (5.3 YPC) the last two years, scoring seven times on 128 carries, and he caught 22 passes for 202 yards and a score off the bench last year. Andrews is off to the NFL after averaging 2,186 yards and 15 touchdowns from scrimmage the last two years, and no RB on the roster is capable of blocking Allen from a similar workload.
