2017
Whaley missed a large chunk of the 2018 campaign due to an ankle injury, and as a result never really got going. He finished with just 368 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground. Whaley averaged just 4.5 yards per carry, and unfortunately has never really lived up to the hype created as a recruit. Rakeem Boyd was a pleasant surprise in place of Whaley last year, and Chase Hayden is expected to return to health after a leg injury of his own. Whaley is technically the leader in the clubhouse for the starting job, but his hold on the position is anything but firm.
Whaley came to the Razorbacks amid much fanfare, but he has yet to live up to those lofty expectations. Whaley did score even touchdowns on the ground in 2017, but was outperformed by graduate transfer David Williams. Whaley averaged just 4.4 yards per tote as a sophomore. Williams is gone, but plenty of competition remains for Whaley in the form of Chase Hayden and T.J. Hammonds. It was Hayden who looked like the best running back on the squad before a broken leg ended his 2017 campaign prematurely. Whaley is still the incumbent, but all three backs figure to get touches in this new high-powered offense.
With Rawleigh Williams forced into retirement due to injury, the Arkansas starting running back workload is up for grabs. Whaley is the favorite to take it after running for 602 yards (5.5 YPC) and three touchdowns last year. At 5-11, 216, Whaley was one of the top running back recruits last year, and so long as he wins the job previously held by Williams, who ran 245 times last year, he'll likely rank among the most productive running backs in the country. The Arkansas running game is as reliable from year to year as any.
