Lands at JUCO program

Thomas transferred to Iowa Western Community College earlier in the offseason and took part in spring practices with the JUCO program, Austin Heinen of the Atlantic News-Telegraph reports.
ANALYSIS
Thomas began his college career at Illinois in 2017, but left the team shortly after the 2018 season began when A.J. Bush and M.J. Rivers passed him up on the depth chart. As a true freshman in 2017, Thomas saw action in four games and even made a couple of starts, but he completed only 28 of 66 passes (42.4 percent) for 375 yards, zero touchdowns and five interceptions. The quarterback at least showed provided a dual-threat presence behind center, racking up 233 yards and a score on 52 carries. Since he didn't see any action in 2018, he'll have three seasons of eligibility remaining. He's set to compete for the starting gig with Iowa Western and could move back to the FBS level in 2020 if he excels during his time at the JUCO level.

Big Ten Spring Preview: Quarterbacks
March 11, 2018
Chris Benzine analyzes the quarterback situations across the Big Ten. Ohio State is tasked with replacing a legend in J.T. Barrett. Is Dwayne Haskins ready to take up his mantle and lead the Buckeyes back to the Big Ten Championship?
2018 Fantasy Outlook
Thomas made his debut for the Illini under center in Week 8 against Minnesota last season, flashing his running ability to the tune of 10 carries for 79 yards. While he remained under center for the next couple of weeks, an injury late against Purdue in Week 10 kept the signal-caller sidelined for another couple of contests. Thomas finished the campaign with 52 carries for 233 yards and a touchdown, but passing efficiency wasn't his friend. In four appearances, Thomas completed just 42.4 percent of his passes for 375 yards while posting a 0:5 TD:INT ratio. As the only quarterback on the roster in spring ball following Chayce Crouch's retirement from football and Jeff George Jr. transferring to Michigan, he may have a leg up on the competition for the starting job, but transfer AJ Bush and a trio of freshmen signal-callers could put pressure on him. Thomas will need to drastically improve himself as a passer this offseason if the Illini are to avoid another woeful season under center.
