Many people expect Nate Costa to emerge as the starter in place of the suspended Jeremiah Masoli, but Carter probably has more to offer. Besides fewer injury worries, Carter is a big-time running threat, while Costa is only a pretty good one. In addition, Thomas showed big-play ability as a passer when he averaged 8.1 yards per attempt and threw three touchdowns to one interception as a freshman in 2008. He seems to make good decisions, even if his accuracy isn't as good as Costa's, and his running ability could make the difference in an offense that's not built for passing. He's a risky pick in any format, but he has upside.
