Two receptions in SEC Championship
December 4, 2016
Howard had two catches for 41 yards Saturday in the SEC Championship against Florida.
Howard had yet another underwhelming regular season, hauling in 37 balls for 445 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged a career-worst 12 yards per catch. Still, he had 208 yards and two touchdowns in the National Championship last season, so the best could still be yet to come for Howard as the Tide cruise into yet another playoff.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
The tight end position isn't one that's seen much prominence in the passing game for Alabama in recent years, but that approach could change a bit with Howard's arrival. He's a consensus five-star recruit with seam-stretching ability at tight end who could do some damage downfield as defenses crash against Alabama's playaction. With a relatively tame passing game and a lot of talented receivers to steal targets, however, it's difficult to see how Howard will make a predictable impact as a freshman, though he has the talent to do so.
One of the bigger surprises in all of pre-draft season was Howard returning to the Tide after putting on one of the greatest individual performances ever in a title game. After a relatively quiet junior campaign, Howard torched Clemson for 208 yards and two touchdowns on just five catches. Not only were those numbers eye-popping, but the accompanying film led people to believe that he could’ve been the top tight end taken in the 2016 draft. Regardless, Howard will be back in an Alabama uniform this season. While Howard’s title game heroics would lead one to believe he’ll be a key factor in the Tide offense, that’s truly no guarantee. Howard has been underutilized each of the past three seasons despite averaging well over 15 yards per reception in each campaign. When Howard is targeted, look out; he caught 80% of his 47 targets for 602 yards -- a 15.8 YPR mark backed up by an astounding 12.8 yards per target. Howard may be the best pro prospect at his position, but Alabama’s offense and its tendencies to not heavily target its tight ends limits his fantasy upside for this season relative to his actual talent.
