Opting out, career likely over
Personal
August 7, 2020
Jackson informed the Maryland coaching staff Friday that he has elected to sit out the 2020 season, Emily Giambalvo of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Giambalvo, coach Mike Locksley acknowledged that Jackson's football career is likely over, as the fifth-year senior isn't expected to pursue opportunities at the professional level. The graduate transfer from Virginia Tech was heading into his second season with Maryland and was the frontrunner to handle the starting job, but his decision to sit out now leaves the Terrapins without much experience at quarterback. Unless Alabama transfer Taulia Tagovailoa is granted a waiver for immediate eligibility, redshirt freshman Lance LeGendre will likely head into the season as the favorite for the starting job.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
Jackson had a minor eligibility scare earlier in the spring, but he’s been cleared to remain on the team and he’s expected to be under center for the season opener. He put up outstanding passing totals last year as a freshman, throwing for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns to nine interceptions, and he tacked on 324 rushing yards along with six scores. The Hokies rank near the middle of the pack with regard to their passing attack, averaging 240.9 yards per game through the air in 2017 (ranked 56th in FBS) which is likely to provide Jackson with plenty of opportunities to make plays. In addition, Virginia Tech’s aggressive up-tempo offense figures to benefit the young gunslinger.
