Opts for season-ending surgery
Shoulder
October 11, 2021
Miami head coach Manny Diaz said Monday that King will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, Andrea Adelson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
King initially suffered the injury in the Hurricanes' Week 3 loss to Michigan State, but he finished out the contest before missing Miami's next two games. Unless he pursues a medical redshirt, the sixth-year senior will conclude his college career with season-ending injuries in three of his last four campaigns. One of the nation's top dual-threat signal-callers at Houston in 2018 and 2019 before he transferred to Miami ahead of the 2020 campaign, King appeared in 14 games for the Hurricanes, completing 64.7 percent of his passes for 3,453 yards and a 26:9 TD:INT while adding four scores and 634 yards on the ground. Freshman Tyler Van Dyke will serve as Miami's starter moving forward.

King’s torn ACL in the bowl game shouldn’t prevent him from starting the season, but it raises questions about what he’ll offer as a runner. The senior has been a top-tier producer in college fantasy since 2017 thanks in large part to his mobility as he’s rushed for 1,903 yards and 32 touchdowns in that span. Even if King isn’t torching on the ground, he can still be effective as a passer after completing 64 percent of his passes at 8.2 YPA in 2020. There’s risk of King not providing the rushing numbers we’re used to, but his track record keeps him as a Top 20 quarterback.
Assuming King can hold up physically and mentally to the increased weekly competition at a Power 5 school, something he's done in small sample sizes previously, he looks poised to have a huge campaign for the Hurricanes. King's rushing ability makes him a high-end option in all fantasy formats, having rushed for 28 scores over the past three seasons, including six in just four games in 2019 before injury and redshirting. He comes in experienced in a spread offense, which the Hurricanes will transition too under new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, formerly at SMU where he made Shane Buechele a fantasy commodity. Don't let Miami's lack of receiving stats fool you on the talent King has at his disposal, the Hurricanes are still loaded with speed and size at all skill positions, those players just havent been put in a position to succeed. Offensive line concerns are valid, and King may not have the nuances of Lashlee's system down immediately with no spring, so it could take a while to get going. But once everyone is on the same page, this offense is poised to pop on a weekly basis.
On a per-game basis, no quarterback was more prolific than King in 2018. Not Kyler Murray, not Dwayne Haskins, not Tua Tagovailoa. King is the total package. A converted receiver, King uses his athleticism as a devastating rusher, as evidenced by his 674 yards and 14 scores on the ground. But he’s also polished as a passer (36:6 TD:INT) and his passing could reach a new level with Dana Holgorsen installing his spread offense. King has all the physical tools, along with the system and supporting cast, to repeat as college fantasy’s top asset.
King followed the Greg Ward blueprint of starting out at receiver for the Cougs only to supplant a high recruit at quarterback. And, like Ward, King proved to be a natural. He took over in October and completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,238 yards, six TDs and two picks. King also proved to be a rushing threat with a nose for the end zone, racking up eight rushing touchdowns. King won't have his top wideouts from last season, but he's more experienced and will be the do-it-all threat in Houston's offense.
