After leading Saints tight ends in catches (18) and yards (164) in 2006, Campbell missed all of last season with a back injury. All indications are that Campbell will be fully healthy come Week 1, but with the Saints addition last year of Eric Johnson, Campbell will be nothing more than a backup this season. Though Campbell will see some action, he will have to battle both Johnson and Billy Miller for playing time.
Remarkably, Campbell was the Saints' most productive tight end in 2006 despite catching just 18 passes for 164 yards. Campbell is unlikely to be the team's leading tight end in 2007, however, as the Saints' acquired Eric Johnson this offseason to be the starter. It wouldn't be surprising if the oft-injured Johnson gets hurt sometime this season, at which point Campbell could move into the starting role.
Campbell signed with the Saints after being released by the Bills following a disappointing 2005 campaign in which he caught only 19 passes for 139 yards. Campbell begins the season as the No. 3 tight end on the depth chart and will not have any fantasy value this season.
The Bills were already thin at tight end when third-round draft pick Kevin Everett went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Everett will undergo surgery and will not be back until after the season starts. Buffalo will turn to the combination of Campbell and Tim Euhus, both of whom are coming off knee surgeries. Without Everett to infuse the position, the Bills tight end situation will be similar to last year, when four tight ends combined for 37 catches. Add to that the bleak scene of a rookie quarterback (J.P. Losman) and we’re not exactly touting Campbell for fantasy rosters. Campbell did have five touchdowns last season, but we expect more emphasis on the ground game to help Losman.
Campbell, who had 34 catches and one touchdown in 2003, could have more of a role this season with a new offense and Dave Moore no longer in the picture. It's worth noting, however, that new coach Mike Mularkey never really went to any great lengths to use the tight end while running the Pittsburgh offense, so we’d only concern yourselves with Campbell if you’re in a deep league and need a fairly reliable No. 2 option.
