Campbell is the third tight end on the Saints' roster and underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason. While he will be ready for the start of the season, his role will be primarily as a blocker and will receive very few looks in the passing game.
Campbell missed nearly all of 2007 with an injured elbow, and there's some uncertainty about his health entering this season. If he's at 100%, he's the Lions' best option at tight end, a position that was not utilized much under Mike Martz, but could be more of a focus in new offensive coordinator Jim Colletto's scheme.
Campbell, who scored a career-high four touchdowns in 2006, becomes the unquestioned No. 1 after the departure of Marcus Pollard. But the Lions were among the bottom of the league in targeting tight ends in the red zone (eight times, tied 27th in NFL), and Campbell has little track record as a receiver. The position has been de-emphasized in the offense and will continue that trend with the first-round selection of WR Calvin Johnson in this year’s draft.
Backup tight end will be used primarily as a blocker instead of a pass catcher.
Block-first TE.
Campbell is OPP (Official Parcells Player), but Jason Witten's development should limit Campbell's contributions on offense mainly to blocking assignments.
Campbell left New York to join the Cowboys, who now employ his former offensive coordinator, Sean Payton, as the quarterbacks coach. Campbell signed a three-year contract, worth $1.3 million. Campbell will compete for time and receptions with Tony McGee and third-round draft pick Jason Witten. It's likely he'll be more valuable to Dallas as a blocker than a receiver.
