Wilson is good whenever he is wide open and he doesn't have to complain about contact from opposing defenders. He has his value only as a safety valve receiver and doesn't contribute consistently enough to maintain much fantasy value. He has one touchdown reception in 31 regular-season games since signing with Pittsburgh before the 2005 season.
Wilson will start opposite of Hines Ward. He nearly got himself put in coach Bill Cowher's doghouse mid-season last year, complaining that the team didn't pass enough. Imagine that. Wilson might put up some decent yardage numbers, but it's doubtful he'll become much of a redzone target -- he's caught a total of six touchdowns in 69 NFL contests with the 49ers and Steelers.
The Steelers' defense initiated Wilson the first week of training camp with some rough play, and Wilson responded with some big catches and some jawing of his own. The Randle El clone should put up decent numbers. Last year he caught 47 passes for 641 yards for the 49ers. Look for similar, to slightly lower, numbers in 2005.
Wilson caught 30 balls for 346 yards and a TD while also returning kickoffs for the 49ers. As of July 2004, he is listed as the starter at WR but look for him to be either the third or fourth receiver behind Brandon Lloyd, Rashaun Woods, and/or Curtis Conway. In leagues that count return yardage, Wilson will probably be the team's main kickoff returner, which will boost his value.
With the release of JJ Stokes, Wilson has a shot at the 49ers #3 receiver position. Wilson will be in fight with draft pick Brandon Lloyd for the position. Look for 30-35 catches and 350 yards receiving with 3-4 TDs.
