Smith (foot) will be released by the Steelers, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith, who played 13 seasons for the Steelers, was slated to make $4.5 million this season, so this move helps the team clear up some needed cap space. Smith has been bothered by injuries the past few seasons, so at this point it's unclear if he'll continue playing now that he's been cut loose by the Steelers.

Smith does not rack up many sacks, so he often gets overlooked in fantasy circles. The Steelers certainly missed his presence on the field last year as Smith missed the majority of the season with a torn rotator cuff. His loss coupled with the loss of Troy Polamalu was too much for the defense to handle. He is expected to be healthy heading into 2010, and should help the Steelers' defense rebound from their sub-par 2009 campaign.
Steelers linebackers get all the publicity, so Smith’s performance for the Super Bowl champs may have escaped attention. Pittsburgh’s left defensive end bounced back from a sub-par 2007 season, when he missed significant time due to a torn biceps tendon – posting 60 tackles and tying a career high with 5.5 sacks. At 6-5, 298, Smith is strong enough to bull-rush opposing linemen and track down ball-carriers.
After suffering a torn biceps in 2007 and missing the end of the season, Smith looks to be healthy again and will fill the left defensive end spot for Pittsburgh. He is a very valuable player to the Steelers but has limited to no fantasy potential, as Pittsburgh's linebackers get more sack opportunities than the linemen in their 3-4 scheme.
Smith has averaged just under five sacks per season since taking over as the Steelers' left defensive end in 2000 and should continue on the same pace this fall. He has 34.5 career sacks.
Smith's sacks total fell from eight to just two in 2006. The 30-year-old starting defensive end will need to have a strong season following the departure of fellow DE Kimo von Oelhoffen.
Smith has continued to improve in each of his seven seasons with the Steelers. In 2004, Smith recorded eight sacks and 43 tackles (31,12). He also recovered three fumbles and showed a knack for being around the ball at crucial times.
