Toefield arrives in Carolina with a situation similar to that of the one he had in Jacksonville for the past couple of seasons with Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew ahead of him on the depth chart. With the Panthers, it's veteran DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart vying for the bulk of the touches, so Toefield will be confined to about five touches each week as the third running back on the depth chart barring an injury to Williams or Stewart.
Toefield has seen his production fall in each of his four years, and there is no reason to believe that trend to stop in 2007. The emergence of Maurice Jones-Drew in the Jags' backfield, as well as the return of Greg Jones from an ACL injury, have rendered Toefield to third- or even fourth-string status, and he warrants little, if any fantasy consideration.
Toefield could get some goal line carries now that Greg Jones is out for the year.
With whispers that Fred Taylor’s knee injury could linger into the season, Toefield has a chance to see regular work in 2005. At 5-11, 232 pounds, Toefield is a power back that knows how to use his blockers and take advantage of cutback lanes as they open up. Toefield has good explosiveness and can break tackles in the open field. And he’s effective as a receiver, catching 28 passes in 2004. Toefield’s value will depend on Taylor’s health, so keep an eye on reports in training camp, but should Taylor go down, Toefield is the favorite to pick up the slack. Keep in mind, however, that Greg Jones or even Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala could vulture carries near the goal line.
Toefield finished 2003 as Jacksonville's third-down back and that should continue this season. He missed most of preseason with a high ankle sprain, but begins the season as the No. 2 back behind Fred Taylor. Greg Jones, drafted in the second round of the 2004 draft, will also get some carries out of the backfield. It could be that Toefield and Jones share the backup role.
Toefield will compete with Elvis Joseph and David Allen to be Fred Taylor's backup. As many fantasy players know, Jacksonville's second string running back has turned out to be a valuable fantasy producer because of Taylor's injuries.
