Phillips was arrested and charged with choking his wife Sunday, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2009 season was brief for Phillips. In September, Phillips suffered a badly broken left thumb and was placed on injured reserve. He is scheduled to become a free agent in March. Phillips, when healthy, was a starting safety for the Buccaneers for seven seasons. His long history of injuries, combined with this incident, probably make him a long shot to return to the team for the 2010 season.

Phillips, who finished with 86 tackles in 2008 despite missing five games with a broken arm, is a bit of a mystery entering 2009 because he may be switching to LB. Even if he moves to LB he should still be a starter but it is unclear if he will still be the same play-maker he has been at safety. Either way, keep Phillips on your radar in IDP leagues for 2009, especially if he can stay healthy.
Already one of the best tacklers at his position, Phillips added the interception to his repertoire last season. While he might not reach four picks again, Phillips will still hold value with his tackle totals.
Starting strong safety in 2006 (104 tackles, two interceptions in 16 games), but he'll face competition in camp.
Returns as the starting strong safety for the Bucs. 46 tackles, 15 assists, no picks in 13 games in 2005.
Replaced John Lynch at safety for the Bucs in 2004, and by mid-season, no one really missed Lynch anymore. Should be healthy by the start of camp.
With the departure of John Lynch, Phillips is the likely starter at strong safety for the Bucs this season. Phillips impressed as an injury fill-in last season, and the Bucs' decision to let Lynch go appears to be as much, if not more, about what they perceive as Phillips' potential as about Lynch's salary.
