The former first-round pick produced big time on a per play basis, averaging 10.5 yards per target and 16.6 yards per catch. Moreover, Williams scored 10 touchdowns on just 60 targets – the best TD/target rate in the NFL, even beating Randy Moss. At 6-4, 214, Williams has excellent size and the speed to get deep. He also has decent quickness and good leaping ability. Williams tends to lose focus, however, and he'll have to battle for opportunities this year with Troy Williamson and Jerry Porter now in the fold. Matt Jones, an even bigger red-zone target with more straight-ahead speed, could also cut into Williams' looks if he makes the team. But at 25, Williams still has some upside if things break his way.
While Williams did set career highs in receptions, yards and touchdowns in 2006, he is still considered as something of a disappointment from a fantasy perspective, and is generally a player to avoid on draft day. The team's acquisition of wideouts Dennis Northcutt and Mike Walker may eventually push Williams down the depth chart, or even off the team. Poor offseason performances haven't helped Williams' cause, and we would only suggest him as a waiver wire pickup if a number of Jags receivers get hurt.
Reggie Williams is a thoroughbred whose physical tools rival those of any receiver in the league. He also plays a hard-nosed style that earns points with the coaches. So why isn’t the ninth overall pick in 2004 flying high in 2006? His ascent to greatness has been impeded by injuries and inconsistency. Much still remains uncertain. The injuries are behind him but as he enters his magical third season, he needs show that he’s eliminated dropped passes, erroneous routes, and lacking concentration from his game. The early prognosis does not look great. The usual inconsistencies have caused Williams to lag behind Matt Jones and Ernest Wilford in the three-way battle for the two Jaguars starting receiver slots. Williams has time to turn it around and when he does, he’ll be a force. The main problem facing fantasy owners is that no one knows when that time will come, and even worse, Williams has given no indication that he’s turning the corner. It could click two weeks from now, it could be two months from now, or it may just be that Reggie won’t become the player the Jaguars thought he could be. For now, expect about 40-45 catches and 500 yards and upgrade him a slight bit because of the possibility, but not probability, that he could break out this year.
Williams never really settled in as a rookie last season and as a result the 2004 first-round pick was somewhat of a disappointment for the team. His numbers left a lot to be desired, as he caught a dismal 27 passes for 268 yards and one score. The team is giving him every opportunity to turn things around this season, all but handing him the the second receiver spot opposite Jimmy Smith. He has the physical tools to breakout in 2005 and should benefit from new offensive coordinator Charile Smith's new vertical passing game.
Williams beat out Troy Edwards for the starting wideout job opposite No. 1 receiver Jimmy Smith, so in itself, that gives him value. However, Williams and the Jaguars offense did not look particulary crisp in preseason. We'll have to see what unfolds in the first few weeks of the regular season.
