Anderson was released by the Bills on Saturday, The Buffalo News reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bills had their tight end rotation figured out nearly a month ago, with Derek Schouman, Robert Royal and Derek Fine making the team. Schouman and Fine are injured, but probably won't miss the season and the team will risk going with those three guys for now. Because the Bills are using a fullback this season, perhaps they don't have to go so deep at tight end.

Anderson has never been more than a mediocre fantasy tight end, even during his best season in Oakland (303 yards and three touchdowns in 2005). While new offensive coordinator Turk Schonert’s offense may highlight the tight end more than recent Bills’ teams, expect Robert Royal, or even Derek Schouman – not Anderson - to reap most of those opportunities. Buffalo is bringing five tight ends to training camp, so Anderson isn’t even guaranteed the top backup job.
.
Anderson was tied for 11th among tight ends with 11 red-zone targets, but just doesn’t offer enough overall value to warrant picking as a starter. The Raiders tight ends caught just 30 passes in 2005, making them 30th in the league. The team will change the offense under new coach Art Shell, who is expected to install a more physical attack, one that features a tight end who can take on linebackers and defensive ends. To that end, Shell brought in Marcellus Rivers (24 catches in Houston last season) for competition, so Anderson’s shine has diminished.
Oakland traded last year’s starter, Doug Jolley, opening the position for Anderson. Raiders coach Norv Turner likes the 6-foot-7 Anderson, a 2004 seventh-round pick, who has the size/speed package that more teams are looking for in a tight end. Last season, Anderson caught 13 passes for 175 yards in nine games (19.5 yards per game, 13.5 yards per catch) before a knee injury ended his season. Turner likes the downfield passing attack – the addition of Randy Moss should make that abundantly clear – so don’t expect big breakout numbers from Anderson. But he might be a nice sleeper pick as the season develops. Concentrate on landing a more secure option to start the season, but keep an eye on his production.
While coach Norv Turner is high on him, Anderson is buried on the depth chart. His impact this season is minimal.
