Lewis is a five-year veteran that will have a hard time making Arizona’s 53-man roster this season. The Cardinals have a deep secondary and they spent two of their first four picks on defensive backs during April’s draft. It makes more sense for Arizona to fill its roster with young projects than with older tweeners like Lewis.
Lewis is expected to challenge for the starting safety position.
Lewis beat out Mike Adams to be the starting free safety during 2006 and played well down the stretch using his aggressive, hard-hitting style to earn a new three-year deal with the 49ers. The free agent signing of Michael Lewis probably relegates him to be the backup strong and free safety.
Saw time at free and strong safety last year, starting a few games due to injuries, and will be a backup at both positions in 2006.
Backup strong safety and special teams player.
Lewis will back up Ronnie Heard and Dwaine Carpenter at free safety and see some work when the 49ers use six defensive backs.
