Thomas is currently a free agent, but if he signs somewhere for 2013, it is likely to be as a backup.
After missing much of last year with concussion issues, Thomas will return to the Saints as the team's second tight end. However, his fantasy value is severely hampered by the tight end starting opposite of his, All Pro Jimmy Graham. As a result, don't expect Thomas to see many targets barring injury.
Thomas was expected to back up Jeremy Shockey last season but was passed by rookie Jimmy Graham on the depth chart. While a change of scenery could have help Thomas' fantasy value, he will return to New Orleans as a trusted veteran. Still, in the Saints' high-powered offense, it would only take an injury to Graham for Thomas to become fantasy relevant.
In 2009, Thomas shattered career highs in both receptions and receiving yards. In coach Sean Payton's offense, the tight end is utizlied heavily as a receiver. With Jeremy Shockey's health history, Thomas is one injury away from becoming a top target in a prolific offense, an enviable position for most tight ends in the NFL.
With nine catches for 93 yards in 15 games, Thomas' biggest impact on the Pats' 2008 season unfortunately was the costly personal foul he committed late in the team's Week 9 loss to the Colts. Chris Baker and Alex Smith have been added to the mix, so he'll have to hustle to stick around. Chances are, he will, but the sleeper label has faded for now.
Now that Daniel Graham is out of the picture, Thomas, who is recovering from a broken foot, has a chance to emerge as a fantasy sleeper if he can get/stay healthy in a timely fashion. He needs to improve his blocking, but along with Ben Watson, he gives the Pats a second tight end with nice upside as a pass-catcher.
As long as Ben Watson and Daniel Graham are around, it's hard to imagine Thomas bursting on to the fantasy scene, but we wouldn't be surprised to see him grab the occasional touchdown, much like the man (Christian Fauria) whose spot as the team's No.3 tight end he is taking. He has already impressed the team with his hands in training camp and provides an in-house alternative should Graham depart after this season via free agency.
