While the fourth receiver position on most teams would not be fantasy relevant, with Drew Brees running the show, the Saints are not your normal NFL offense. 2012 will be a make or break season for Arrington as he competes for that fourth wide out position. With Robert Meachem departing to San Diego and Devery Henderson's best years behind him, Arrington will have every opportunity to claim a big role in one of the NFL's most prolific offenses. However, the Saints weren't about to merely hand the oft-injured Arrington a substantial role, as the team drafted wide out Nick Toon in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. Still, the talented Arrington should have first crack at the opportunity in training camp and could turn some heads with his red zone abilities.
Arrington only appeared in one game last year but racked up seven receptions for 79 yards against Tampa Bay in the season finale. Arrington has struggled through injuries his first few years in the pros but finally healthy, he showed a glimpse of his immense talent. Should the Saints release Devery Henderson, Arrington would likely assume the role of fourth receiver for New Orleans and could be a deep sleeper should injuries befall the Saints' top pass catchers.
Arrington impressed coaches in training camp last year, only to have his season end with a severely sprained ankle in the team's first preseason game. Arrington has talent, but he has had serious problems staying healthy. If he can make it through all of the preseason healthy and impress the staff once again, Arrington could find a roster spot on the team. Once on the team, any Saints receiver should be viewed as potentially fantasy relevant, particularly if the injury bug should strike.
Arrington, who was injured for the entirety of the 2008 season, has caught the attention of the Saints coaching staff during the offseason. While he will likely start the year fifth on the Saints wide receiver depth chart, Arrington has the potential to challenge Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem for playing time in the Saints high-octane offense. If injuries strike New Orleans's receivers again this year, Arrington could catch a few balls and show flashes of his potential. However, he will likely need a full year of seasoning before he is ready to appear on the fantasy radar screen of potential owners.
Arrington - a seventh-round pick in this year's draft out of Michigan - is a solid possession receiver and has impressed coaches so far this offseason. However, Arrington finds himself among a crowded Saints receiver corps that includes all six wideouts from last year's roster, and he will need to continue to dazzle coaches to avoid being placed on the practice squad. Nevertheless, given how tightly bunched the team's receivers are, it's not impossible that Arrington could eventually emerge this season as the team's No. 3 or 4 wideout.
