Suspension
September 4, 2014
Brown has been suspended for eight games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing drugs, NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Brown, who was waived by the Texans last month, could catch on with another team once his suspension is complete, but he's no longer a candidate to bolster any team's running back depth early on.

Brown suffered through an injury-shortened 2013, with its highlights well outweighed by its downsides, and ended up leaving the Giants as a free agent this offseason. At 6-foot, 227, and with a 4.37 40 time to his credit, Brown's measurables are great, but his production has been lacking and he's not getting any younger, as he'll turn 28 in December. Few NFL players can lay claim to as much of a journeyman's career as Brown has had so far. Since being drafted by the Giants in '09, he was cut by five separate teams before ending up back in New York for the last two seasons. After missing the first eight games of last year with a broken leg, he returned with a 115-yard debut in Week 10 and was productive for the following four weeks, but closed out the season with three straight clunkers, rushing a total of 40 times for 68 yards. Never a major factor through the air, Brown doesn't figure to become one this year especially after being waived by the Texans in August and then suspended by the NFL for eight games to start the season.
A 6-0, 224-pound bruiser with good speed, Brown leapfrogged first-round pick David Wilson on the Giants depth chart last year and averaged 5.3 YPC. Brown made his mark at the goal line as well, converting 8-of-10 attempts inside the five-yard line and scoring in seven of the eight games in which he received a carry. Poised to work in tandem with the dynamic Wilson in 2013, Brown's season was derailed in late August when he sustained a leg fracture in the Giants' preseason finale.
Will vie to make the team as a reserve running back.
Will compete for a reserve role.
Vying to return after an Achilles' injury. Would be a No. 4 back if he's healthy enough to make the roster.
A true power back at 6-0, 228, Brown also ran an impressive 4.49 40 and was rumored to go as high as the second round in the draft. Ultimately, a history of foot problems lowered his stock to the end of the fourth round, where GM Jerry Reese couldn’t resist taking the best player available despite little need for a running back. Brown wasted no time immediately impressing in minicamps and was considered the favorite to act as the team’s No. 3 back, though he’ll have to beat out Danny Ware. Brown could also beat out Ahmad Bradshaw for the No. 2 role, which remains open for competition. With starter Brandon Jacobs so injury-prone and running behind the NFL’s best run-blocking unit, Brown is a good late-round flier. Remember, Derrick Ward totaled 1,409 yards as a backup in this system last season.

Brown, who did not play in Houston's first preseason game Saturday night, appears to have been the victim of the game circumstances. Head coach Bill O'Brien said he stuck with starter Jonathan Grimes because Houston's inept offense didn't get off many plays in the first half, the Texans' official site reports.
