O'Connell (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, FOX Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
O'Connell wasn't much of a factor in the Chiefs' passing game this season, netting three catches for 18 yards before falling to injury. Offensive lineman Rich Ranglin will take O'Connell's spot on the 53-man roster.

O'Connell is currently the third tight end on the depth chart, but his roster spot could be in jeopardy if the Chiefs elect to keep six wide receivers. His spot may be safe though if Tony Moeaki is slow to return from a torn ACL. Either way, with just 12 career receptions, O'Connell is highly unlikely to make his name known on the fantasy landscape.
O'Connell will be a reserve tight end if he is able to make the roster.
Kansas City's selection of Tony Moeaki in April's draft may have been the beginning of the end of O'Connell's time as a Chief. A seventh-round pick last season, he was active for just four games and finished with two receptions for seven yards. Heading into training camp, he's likely sitting fourth on the depth chart.
O’Connell didn’t come off the board until the seventh round of the draft last April, but the Chiefs clearly saw something they liked, because they shipped off a 2010 pick to Miami to grab him. However, his unpolished blocking skills will likely limit his playing time as a rookie. The tight end competition is wide open in Kansas City, but O’Connell is a long shot to win the job.
