ANALYSIS
Cunningham tore his Achilles tendon during Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage and will now require surgery. Expected to miss the entire upcoming season, Cunningham lands on IR and potentially opens up a roster spot for another outside linebacker.

Cunningham, who recorded 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks in his third season with the Patriots in 2012, didn't make the cut out of training camp.

Cunningham, a 2010 second-rounder, is struggling to secure a depth role at DE at this point, so he is not an IDP factor.

The second-year outside linebacker/defensive end, who was drafted to help the Pats' pass rush, needs to have a strong camp to secure a starting gig.

The Patriots have had a need for pass-rushers for a while now, and Cunningham gives them a good candidate to fill that role. He was a 4-3 defensive end in college, so don't expect him to see the field a ton right away as an outside linebacker in New England.
