RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2018

There was no outlook written for T.J. Yates.

2017

Yates signed with the Bills in April with the hope of competing for a backup job at quarterback, but the team opted to keep Nathan Peterman and Joe Webb as the Nos. 2 and 3 options behind starter Tyrod Taylor. In early September, the Bills waived/injured Yates while he was dealing with a concussion, and the veteran signal caller could end up reverting to the team's injured reserve list.

2015

Yates will compete with Sean Renfree for the right to back up Matt Ryan in 2015.

2014

Yates, who was acquired in the offseason, will start the season as Matt Ryan's backup. He'll only see garbage time in a blowout, unless an injury calls him into action.

2013

Yates is expected to serve as Matt Schaub's backup in 2013.

2012

After starting five games in Matt Schaub's absence last season, Yates will return to his back-up role this season with valuable game experience in case he is needed again.

2011

Yates turned around his pro prsspects with a breakout 2010 season at the University of North Carolina, turning himself into a fifth-round draft pick by Houston. He showed good maturity in 2010 after three seasons of inconsistency and calls for him to be replaced. Yates improved his accuracy and decision making in 2010 to lead the Tar Heels to an 8-5 record in a suspension-plagued season for the program. The Texans still have Matt Leinart, who was re-signed to a two-year deal, so Yates looks like the No. 3 QB for the Texans.
