Trying out for Lions
RBFree Agent
August 8, 2017
Cobb is working out for the Lions on Tuesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Cobb's trying out alongside fellow running backs Josh Robinson and Bronson Hill, so it seems the Lions may not be content with their depth behind Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick (wrist) at this juncture. Cobb is easily the most accomplished of the three tryout players, as the 2015 fifth-rounder carried 52 times for 146 yards and one touchdown his rookie season with the Titans while Robinson and Hill only have 19 career carries combined. However, Cobb has averaged just 2.8 yards per carry and is a downhill runner who's likely a better fit in a power run scheme, something the Lions don't employ.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2015
Cobb missed the first nine games of his rookie season with a calf injury, and averaged just 2.8 yards per carry upon returning. His lack of explosiveness clearly left the Titans unimpressed, as they went out and made a pair of high-profile running back acquisitions in DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry in the offseason. Both of them are capable of doing everything Cobb can and more, which led to the 2015 fifth-rounder getting cut by the team.
A fifth-round pick this year, Cobb is almost the ideal blueprint for a between-the-tackles power back. His short, thick build gives him a low center of gravity, and his burst into the hole and willingness to lower his pads even further makes him difficult to bring down. In fact, in his final two college seasons, more than half his yards came after contact. Cobb doesn't have good speed (4.81 40) and won't make a lot of defenders miss, but his bludgeoning approach should fit well as a short-yardage complement to Bishop Sankey in the Titans' backfield.
