Smith was expected to compete for a starting job this season, but a torn ACL suffered in April ruled him out for the year.
Smith tore his ACL toward the end of last season and appears doubtful to be ready for Week 1, allowing Quincy Enunwa and Kenbrell Thompkins opportunities to get a hold of the No. 3 wideout spot. Unfortunately, with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker likely dominating the wideout targets, there's fairly limited upside for Smith and the other receivers.
After leading the nation with 28.2 yards per catch last season at Ohio State, the Jets selected Smith early in the second round of this year’s draft with hopes of adding an explosive downfield threat. That aim comes while veterans Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker are penciled in as the Jets’ top two receivers, likely leaving Smith to occupy a third wideout role he seems well suited for. In beating defenses for 931 yards last season, an impressive 12 of Smith’s 33 catches went for touchdowns. So while he’ll have to prove he’s not a one-trick pony and also have to bear with the Jets' suspect quarterback play, Smith still brings significant upside into the NFL and could displace veteran Jeremy Kerley as New York’s slot receiver sooner than later.
