Hopes for return to playing field
WRFree Agent
May 31, 2019
Mumphery has been training in Dallas with the hope of resuming his NFL career, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
The Texans parted ways with Mumphery in June 2017 in the wake of an off-field allegation stemming from the wideout's time at Michigan State, a situation that ultimately culminated in Mumphery being cleared of any wrongdoing. Following a recent settlement that included an undisclosed financial sum to Mumphery from the university -- as well as the finding of fault against Mumphery being vacated -- the legal matter is now closed. The 26-year-old, who was a fifth-round draft pick of Houston in 2015, now hopes to resume his pro football career.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
Mumphery's role in his second season with the Texans was reduced after a rookie 2015 campaign in which he was the team's main return man. With Tyler Ervin taking over in the return game, Mumphery was left to carve out a role on offense, but faced competition from several wideouts that were drafted higher than he was back in 2015 (fifth round). Houston added several wideouts, mostly undrafted free agents, during the offseason and it wouldn't be surprising if one beats out Mumphery for the fifth wideout job.
Mumphery had some fill-in opportunity when injuries hit Cecil Shorts and/or Nate Washington in 2015, but most of his contributions came on special teams as the team's primary returner. He finished middle of the pack in that area and both return jobs will be up for grabs during training camp. The plan under head coach Bill O'Brien that past two years has been to use a wideout, down on the depth chart, as a returner -- one roster spot, two roles. That profile fits Mumphery, but there are more wideouts around to fill roster spots in 2016. Beyond experienced veterans DeAndre Hopkins and Cecil Shorts, the Texans have three receivers that were early-round draft picks the last two years. There might not be room for Mumphery.
