2018 Fantasy Outlook
With only four touches through his first two seasons, Smith seemed destined to remain a special teams player, but he opened eyes with a 45-yard run in Week 7 against the 49ers, then got a chance to shine when Elliott served a six-game suspension. Smith scored five touchdowns in a four-game stretch sharing work with Alfred Morris, and his 160 scrimmage yards against the Giants in Week 14 cemented his spot as the No. 2 back when Elliott returned for Week 16. The 24-year-old doesn't have a lot of speed or quickness, but he has the size and power to grind out extra yards between the tackles. The Cowboys replaced Morris with seventh-round pick Bo Scarbrough and also traded for Tavon Austin, but it appears Smith would still be first in line for the lead job if anything were to happen to Elliott. Smith rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown on 44 carries over 16 games in 2018. He also caught nine of 12 targets for 60 yards.
ANALYSIS
Smith was rarely much of a factor in the offensive gameplan outside of a lone spot start in Week 17 while filling in for a resting Ezekiel Elliott. His longest play went for just 14 yards, and his 2.2 YPC was among the least efficient in the league. It wouldn't be a surprise if the Cowboys move on when Smith becomes an unrestricted free agent at the beginning of the league year.

2016
2015
Smith's willingness to do whatever the Cowboys ask of him -- whether it's convert to fullback, play special teams, or act as a cheerleader for his brother Jaylon's rehab from knee surgery -- kept him on the roster last season, but only one touch (a four-yard reception) in seven games gives a clear idea of his fantasy upside. He may fill a depth role again in 2017, but that's his ceiling.
The older brother of 2016 second round pick Jaylon Smith, Rod played in one game with the Seahawks as a rookie before being cut and catching on with the Cowboys for the remainder of last season as primarily a special teams player. Converted to fullback in the offseason due to his size and willingness to lay a hit, Smith could see plenty of snaps in 2016 if he can win a starting role at that position but his touches would remain very limited as he's tasked with opening holes for Ezekiel Elliott and keeping Tony Romo upright rather than getting yards on his own.
An undrafted free agent out of Ohio State, Smith has no chance of making the roster. His best hope is the practice squad, and that might not even happen.
