January 8, 2019
Ervin signed a reserve/futures contract with the Ravens on Tuesday, freelance NFL writer Howard Balzer reports.
ANALYSIS
Ervin spent the last half of the 2018 season on Baltimore's practice squad and he'll now set his sights on an active roster spot in 2019. The young running back appeared in 25 games for Houston over the past three seasons but only had five rushes for 15 yards and 14 catches for 91 yards over that span. He'll have a shot at a depth slot with the Ravens next season.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
2016
The Texans used a fourth-round pick on Ervin in 2016 and are still waiting for return on that investment two years later. He was the primary return man on both punts and kicks during his rookie season, but exhibited ball-security problems. In 2017, he was poised to add third-down back to his special-teams role. He had 10 targets over the first two weeks before his season was cut short by a torn patellar tendon in Week 4. There's still a need for both roles entering 2018, so much depends on the health of his knee. In a passing-oriented offense with the dynamic Deshaun Watson, Ervin could emerge has a receiving threat, however, he'll be no better than third on backfield depth chart behind Lamar Miller and Alfred Blue to open the season. Ervin's roster spot could be in jeopardy by mid-season if D'Onta Forearm, who begins the campaign on the PUP list with an Achilles injury, is ultimately activated.
Ervin spent most of his rookie season on special teams, leading the Texans in punt and kick returns. Head coach Bill O'Brien never really gave him a shot on offense. And why would he, with Lamar Miller having a career season. Ervin's role shouldn't change too much in 2017. The Texans do feel that he can be a playmaker in the return game.
Ervin, a fourth-round draft pick in 2016, was an explosive back during his time at San Jose State but also improved as a receiver during his final two years with the Spartans. His big-play ability is what attracted the Texans, however, we don't see him making too much of an impact on offense early in his NFL career. Where you might hear about Ervin is in the return game. Boasting a 4.41 40-time, Ervin was a four-year kick returner at San Jose State and added punt returning to his resume the last two seasons, scored five touchdowns on special teams.
