2019 Fantasy Outlook
Following a suspension for the entire 2017 season, Scarlett was reinstated by Florida ahead of his junior campaign, finishing with 131 rushes for 776 yards and five TDs in 13 games. He then declared for the draft and was selected by the Panthers in the fifth round. Despite being a late-round pick, Scarlett finds himself in a fair situation in Carolina. That's because the team's next-best remaining back after Christian McCaffrey is Cameron Artis-Payne, who's never been handed more than 45 carries in any of his four seasons. With strength and quickness, Scarlett will aim to supplant Artis-Payne and serve as McCaffrey's primary backup. Considering the All-Pro almost never leaves the field, however, his understudy's workload likely will consist of a few spare touches on early downs, which already restricts Scarlett's upside before taking into account his nearly non-existent receiving production in college. Scarlett rushed for 35 yards on eight carries and added a 14-yard catch during Friday's 27-14 loss to Buffalo.
Scarlett entered the game in the second quarter in relief of Cameron Artis-Payne and did a solid job of moving the chains on the way toward a pair of second-quarter field goals. Scarlett seems -- on the outset -- like the perfect foil for Christian McCaffrey, a powerful early-down back who can take some of the hits for Carolina's superstars. In practice, McCaffrey carried the ball for 52.6% of Carolina's attempts in 2018, with Cam Newton running for another 24.3%. Surely, the goal is going to be to limit Newton's carries, but will it be enough for Scarlett to be much of a factor?
